Sub-kelvin optical cooling of a micromechanical resonator

Abstract

Using radiation forces, we demonstrate cooling of the vibrational mode of a micro-mechanical resonator made to support a tiny mirror of a resonator. Optical cooling to 135 ± 15 mK from room temperature is demonstrated.
