Abstract
Since the start of exploration of our solar system, including our own moon, there has been a progression of increasingly complicated space missions undertaken by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. This string started in 1964 with the Ranger series of missions to the Moon, and continues to the present with the Phoenix Mission to Mars, with a landing in May, 2008. The success of these missions is due in large part to the optical assemblies and their related imaging systems. These systems have been included on missions that range from our own moon to the outer planets of our solar system, and cover almost the entire span of NASA’s proud 50 year history.
