Laser Cooling and Trapping the Most Magnetic Atom, Dysprosium

Abstract

We report the first laser cooling and trapping of 5×108 Dy atoms using a repumper-free magneto-optical trap (MOT). The MOT confines this electronically complex atom due to Dy’s unsurpassed magnetic dipole moment.
