Abstract

Using an optical lattice formed by four laser beams, we obtain three-dimensional, light-induced, periodic arrays of polystyrene spheres (diameter ≥190nm) in aqueous solution. Several thousands of particles can be arranged into nearly defect-free crystals with high packing density. We observe Bragg scattering and study its dependence on lattice geometry and laser polarization. The trapping force is measured, and good agreement with a theoretical model is found.
