Using a multimode fiber as a high-resolution, low-loss spectrometer

Abstract

We demonstrate that multi-mode optical fibers can function as high-resolution, low-loss spectrometers. Interference between waveguided modes produces wavelength-dependent speckle patterns, which are recorded to retrieve the input spectra with wavelength resolution down to 8 pm.
