Q enhancement of a double-disk cavity based on mode cancellation

Abstract

We propose a way to increase the quality factor of whispering-gallery-mode resonators by using a dielectric double-disk cavity with a vertical air gap. Our cavity reaches a 5.67-folds quality factor enhancement compared to a single disk by radiation field suppression through destructive interference with opposite electric fields in each disk.
