Abstract
A community radiative transfer model (CRTM) has been developed for direct assimilation of clouds and rain-affected radiances. The CRTM includes forward and jacobian simulations of clouds and precipitation. Standard 1dvar processing package called microwave integrated retrieval system is also developed to retrieve all hydrometeors profiles in addition to temperature and water vapor profiles from microwave imager and sounders. Several experiments are conducted at the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) to prove the impacts of direct assimilation of cloudy radiances on hurricane analysis fields. Such tests include the WRF-GSI analysis and Hybrid Variational (HVAR) Scheme (1dvar plus 4dvar). Analysis results are rather promising in terms of depiction of hurricane warm core at the upper troposphere and improved temperature and wind fields at surface.
