Abstract

The objective of the current work is to document the capabilities of the IRS candidate mission meeting its mission objective using the IRS phase A specifications to described the instrument performance. This is done from a combination of information content analysis and retrieval simulation. The initial results indicate the areas of concern, like the potential bias in the retrieved moisture and temperature profiles induced by the pseudo-noise from nearby clouds. More work will be needed to further understand the capabilities of the candidate mission, especially how the instrument characteristics influences the depiction of atmospheric motion.
