Anomalousness: how to measure what you can’t define

Abstract

Because it is hard to define an anomaly, it is problematic to measure the effectiveness of anomaly detectors. One proposed definition leads to a volume-based performance measure, which is illustrated on some kernel-based anomaly detectors.
