Abstract

Several recent papers reported that short terawatt subpicosecond laser pulses in underdence plasmas can be highly unstable against longitudinal modulation on the plasma frequency. Here, we report about the first analytical and numerical detail study devoted to the mechanisms that trigger off this self-modulation and to the condition these mechanisms dominate under.
