Abstract

Single crystals of KCl:Sm2+ have been investigated using selective laser excitation into the 5D0 and 5D1 levels of the 4f6 electron configuration for Sm2+ as a model system for the study of point defects in the alkali halides. Fluorescence occurs in the red and near ir via relaxation from the 5D0 excited state down to the various components of the 7FJ. ground state multiplet.
