Abstract

The luminescence properties of Bi3+ in the orthoborates LnBO3 are strikingly different and depend in a dramatical way on the choice of the host lattice cation Ln. These borates are isomorphous with the several modifications of calcium carbonate. ScBO3 and a modification of LuBO3 have calcite structure with Ln in six coordination. Another modification of LuBO3 and also YBO3 and GdBO3 have vaterite structure with a six- and a twelve coordinated site. Finally LaBO3 has aragonite structure with a nine coordinated site.
