Abstract
Spins confined in semiconductor quantum dots (QD) offer new possibilities for realizing quantum optical systems with unique properties. Given their relatively long spin coherence times, it could be argued that QD spins can be used as solid-state qubits; from the perspective of spin-based solid-state quantum information processing, the demonstration of ability to prepare and read-out the state of a single confined spin is a key step.
