Abstract
The transient grating technique is applied to UV/VIS-pump IR-probe measurements to obtain a background free transient infrared signal. Two infrared probe beams, which are diffracted off a population grating in the sample, are heterodyne detected. The setup is passively phase stabilized. In comparison with conventional UV/VIS-pump IR-probe measurements the signal to noise is enhanced by a factor of 25. This enables us to follow IR transient absorption changes of single site labels in proteins in the sub-mM concentration range. As a first application we study the energy transport along proteins.
