Subharmonic oscillations and chaos in a laser diode coupled to an external cavity

Abstract

The first clear evidence of oscillatory instabilities leading to optical chaos is found in a compound cavity laser diode (LD). The intermode interaction through a third-order nonlinearity provides adequate explanation.
