Abstract

Utilizing a geometrical optics approach, one defines focusing as the conversion of a planar wavefront to a spherical one due to variations in optical path length. In most lenses, the optical path length variation is determined by a refractive index distribution. However, in Integrated Optics Circuits (IOC) materials only a very limited range of refractive indices can be obtained. Moreover, variations in refractive index can cause an excessive amount of scattering. A more acceptable approach for IOC is to generate physical path length differences by changing the profile of the waveguiding layer, while maintaining a uniform refractive index. We have designed and fabricated aberration corrected geodesic lenses having a single axis of revolution.
