Abstract

Several switches using optical waveguide directional couplers have been demonstrated¹-⁴. We report the first experimental realization of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, analogous to the conventional microwave balanced bridge, in the integrated optical format. This switch demonstrates the balancing of both amplitude and phase, in an integrated optical device 38 mm long incorporating several bends that interconnect waveguides of slightly different widths.
