Abstract

Recently, we reported an optical switch design based on the Bragg deflection of guided beams between two crossed single mode channel guides.1 The problem of low deflection efficiency (20%) was attributed to the presence of Li2O out-diffusion waveguide and lack of dielectric buffer layer. This paper discusses the latest results of performance of an improved switch device. Li2O out-diffusion modes were suppressed by LiNbO3 powder treatment and a 1000 Å thick SiO2 coating was employed to isolate the optical beam from the metal electrode.
