Abstract

One of the most interesting and useful features of metal-diffused waveguides is the relative ease with which three-dimensional waveguide structures can be fabricated by forming patterns on the metal before diffusion. A number of uses for these types of guides has been described in the literature (1,2,3). In this paper we will describe the fabrication and the physical properties of diffused LNT stripe guides, describe the propagation of light in these guides, and show the relationship between the observed light propagation characteristics and the physical properties. An important result of this study is that we now understand the relation between the physical and optical parameters and can use this understanding to fabricate stripe guides with any desired number of modes.
