Abstract
Bending losses are an important consideration in the design of integrated optical circuits, since some of the suggested device configurations will require directional change in interconnecting waveguides. It has been predicted that a directional change accomplished by two successive corner bends can have much lower attenuation than a single corner bend1. The lower loss is a consequence of coherent mode coupling at the bends. This paper presents experimental results on the optical transmission of waveguides with two bends which are consistent with this prediction.
