Abstract
Demonstration of highly birefringent single-mode fibers[1,2] that maintain linear polarization points to the use of single-mode fibers together with polarization sensitive optical devices as well as other applications such as fiber gyros[3] non-linear optics[4] etc. The output polarization and its orientation at the end of long length low birefringence fibers[5,6], vary erratically due to minor stresses and changes in ambient conditions that couple energy between the nearly degenerate orthogonal modes.
