Abstract

Integrated optics is coming to a stage of small scale integration where a few optical components are integrated to make a durable and reliable optical devices. Integration of a laser diode (LD) with other optical components seems to be effective in making an optical source, with new functions and/or with high quality, for fiber-optic communications, optical data processing and other applications. We report here the significance in the optical integrated circuit design consideration of the external optical feedback effects on LD properties with experimental results indicating its seriousness. We also report, as a practical solution for this problem, a small and low- loss LD-isolator module developed by integrating, in a hybrid fashion, a 1.3μm InGaAsP/InP double heterostructure (DH) LD, a high efficiency coupling circuit, a micro-optic isolator and a single mode fiber.
