Abstract

Single-mode semiconductor lasers operating near 1.55μm are of considerable interest for long-distance communications. The lowest reported fiber losses1 occur here, making this wavelength attractive for either single- or multi-mode operation. In addition, for single-mode fibers, the waveguide-mode-compensated material dispersion can be made to vanish2 in this region, so that it is especially desirable for wideband optical communications.
