Abstract

Many integrated optical circuits require directional changes of the optical waveguides to accommodate the design parameters of their individual elements. Bending losses of various configurations have been studied both experimentally1 and theoretically2,3. Results for two types of bends are presented in this paper; the first type is corner bends where two straight waveguides are joined together at some angle and the second type is smooth, curved bends having a constant radius of curvature. Experimental results on the optical transmission in titanium diffused LiNbO3 channel waveguides for both types of bends are presented and compared to new theoretical predictions, whose foundations will be reported elsewhere5.
