Abstract

This paper reviews the state-of-the-art for passive guided-wave optical components except for semiconductor components for optical communication systems in Japan. Bulk optical, microoptic and guided-wave optical components have been researched and developed so far. Bulk optical and microoptic components have been successfully made mainly for multimode transmission systems. Some of multimode guided-wave components have been studied to ease fabrication. Much effort has been made to single mode guided-wave components, but they have not yet been put to practical use. Here, isolators, modulators, switches, demultiplexers and star couplers are discussed.
