Abstract

Guided-wave optical frequency shifters are being developed for a variety of applications. Some systems, such as the phase-nulling optical fiber gyroscope, require only moderate frequency shifts of up to several megahertz but with high side-band suppression. Serrodyne frequency translation is attractive for these applications. Here we present experimental results on a Ti:LiNbO3 serrodyne frequency translator which utilizes a single-polarization waveguide design and a specialized sawtooth drive circuit. Overall side-band suppression of 42 dB was achieved for frequency shifts up to 40 kHz. This is the highest known overall side-band suppression yet reported for such a device.
