Abstract

Glass waveguides made by ion-exchange technique are potential candidates for integrated optic applications such as power dividers, star couplers and multiplexers. Although recent reports [1] have demonstrated significant progress in understanding of the basic ion-exchange process, and in the fabrication of low-loss waveguides and I-O components, the structures have not been optimized for a given application such as 1.3μm operation of single-mode fiber communication systems. Most of the work reported to date has been on surface channel waveguides which are shallow, lossy and incompatible with the fibers.
