Abstract

We have constructed silicon-on-insulator (SOI) channel waveguides, and have obtained intensity modulation of multimode 1.3 μm light propagating in those guides using 800 nm light. From a theoretical standpoint1, single-mode SOI guides with submicron height are attractive because of their low propagation losses. However, in these early experiments, we chose to use larger, multimode guides that are easier to work with.
