Abstract
We report a technique for fabricating waveguides in gel-silica glasses by local densification of the substrate glass surface by a focussed laser beam. This is the first time that waveguides in pure silica have been fabricated! The advantages of the technique include the simplicity, amenability to complete automation, pattern delineation without recourse to photolithography and potential for fiber compatibility and monolithic integration.
