Abstract
Conventional coupled-mode theory1 predicts that ideal switching with complete extinction can be achieved in any Δβ coupler with two antisymmetrically detuned sections of equal length provided that the total length is between one and three synchronous coupling lengths Lc. In practice, however, ideal switching can not generally be obtained using this mode of operation and other operating parameters, such as asymmetric detuning, must be employed to obtain an optimum extinction ratio2.
