Abstract

Since optical design software became widely available in the mid-1960s, there has been discussion concerning the existence of local minima in lens design. Kidger (1) discussed this topic at the Rochester Conference on Lens Design with Large Computers in 1966, and more recently Shafer (2) and O'Shea and Sturlesi (3,4) have discussed the presence of multiple solutions for the relatively simple case of the triplet.
