Abstract
A method to identify potential solutions of imaging problems incorporating zoom lenses having two generic moving elements and a spatially-fixed image surface was presented in a companion paper entitled “Insight into First-Order Zoom Lens Design.” While studying this method, it was observed that for certain optical configurations one of the moving elements was required to move only slightly over the entire zoom range. As a consequence, we investigated the possibility of having one of the moving elements remain essentially stationary over a least some reasonable zoom range.
