Practical aspects of designing a multiangle reflectometer

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

In the course of designing a multiangle reflectometer the authors pursued several techniques which failed or were otherwise ill-conceived. The problems of designing a complicated, multidiscipline instrument are not always covered in books and advice from even well-respected colleagues can be misleading. Some of the topics discussed are experiences with optical components, coatings, data acquisition, and laser noise. The advantages of mounted sheet polarizers over Glan-Thompson prisms is dealt with.
