Abstract

Diffractive optical elements, which have a history dating back to the work of Lord Rayleigh and R. W. Wood, have been a subject of renewed interest over the past several years, primarily due to advances in manufacturing technology. The purpose of this paper is to provide a basic introduction to the features of diffractive optics that are most applicable to optical system design.
