Tolerancing of Zonal Surface Irregularities that Arise in the Manufacturing of Lenses

Abstract

A technique for tolerancing zonal surface irregularities using existing optical design software and aspheric defect models has been used in tolerancing optical systems. The technique determines the maximum allowable rotationally symmetric localized peak-to-valley surface error as well as the maximum allowable surface slope error for a specified decrease in performance. Also, the impact of localized errors on imaging can be evaluated.
