Abstract
The optical performance benefits of gradient-index (GRIN) optics have been well established. Index profile depth, shape, and total index change add useful degrees of freedom to correct optical aberrations. However, the manufacture of a specific gradient-index profile can offer significant difficulty. Gradient-index designs are usually specified in terms of index power polynomial coefficients, which have no connection with the ion exchange fabrication process.
