Lenses with air pressure independent back focal length

Abstract

The focal length of optical systems normally depends on the refractive index n of the surrounding medium. Moving for example a lens from normal air with nair ≈ 1.00027 into a vacuum chamber with nvac = 1.00000 requires refocussing due to the change of the back focal length. Design methods to avoid this effect are introduced in the following sections.
