Abstract

Criteria for color correction derived from the dispersion formulas of Hartmann, Cauchy, Schmidt, Conrady, and Buchdahl have been reported in the literature.1 These criteria were used to develop a simple method of selecting combinations of optical materials that are suitable for designing lens systems that are color corrected for at least three wavelengths in the spectral passband of applications. Earlier applications of suitable glass combinations were confined to low aperture apochromats and superachromats. In this paper, the applications of suitable glass combinations to medium and high aperture optical systems will be described. Design examples of photographic objectives and microscope objectives will be presented and the optical performance of these designs are shown.
