Abstract
Development of the SMEC mirror was started as a way to overcome current limitations in aperture size and more specifically the real density of space optical systems of high optical quality1. Most optical systems to date use glass to meet image resolution requirements, but glass is heavy and is difficult stow in a compact configuration within the launch vehicle fairing. Stretched membrane with electro-static curvature (SMEC) is aimed at space optical system to produce diffraction-limited images, easily stow in the launch vehicle fairing and have minimal mass.
