Adaptive Optics in Radio Astronomy

Abstract

Adaptive optical imaging systems [1-8] have not made a significant impact in optical astronomy but, in the guise of selfcalibration or hybrid mapping [13-19], have revolutionised both very long baseline radio interferometry, in that true image formation was made possible, and short baseline interferometry, dramatically improving the dynamic range attainable. Unfortunately, radio astronomers tend to use their own specialised jargon and to publish in their own journals; for this reason specialists in other fields may not be aware of recent work. In this review paper I will attempt to explore the concepts common to all "adaptive opticians" and to translate unfamilar jargon.
