Abstract
Very recently a new detector, the MEPSICRON (Microchannel Electron Position Sensor with time resolution), has been developed with the purpose of overcoming the limitations of the sweep read out photocounter. The MEPSICRON works in the photon counting regime and can be described as a position sensitive photomatrix tube. A simple description of this instrument is given by Firmani et al., 1982. The MEPSICRON internal noise is given basically by the shot noise of the photocathode. The electron and ion dark current is very low and in most cases completely irrelevant. The total number of pixels, i.e. the number of spatially resolved locations, is 8×105 for the circular surface of 25 mm of diameter of the tube.
