Low-Loss High Index Contrast SOI Waveguides: Expecting the Unexpected

Abstract

This talk reviews experimental and analytical work in our quest for low-loss, high-index-contrast silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) waveguides, yielding a number of intriguing effects that range from bizarre polarization characteristics to remarkable fundamental quantum electrodynamic phenomena.
