Abstract

The importance of the numerical simulation of integrated optics devices for optical telecommunication systems is constantly growing and much attention is being devoted to the development of new powerful and effective numerical codes for solving the paraxial wave equation for planar structures. However, the numerical techniques so far presented are not completely satisfactory because they are time consuming, and their accuracy have not been well assessed; moreover they make use of approximated boundary conditions and do not seem to be able to treat conveniently longitudinally variant geometries.
