Abstract

Semi-empirical electronic-band structure calculations have become a prominent part in the understanding and design of quantum-well lasers. This paper reviews semi-empirical k•p. calculations of confinement energy levels, optical transition strengths, spontaneous emission spectra and gain spectra of lasers, based on both unstrained GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells as well as strained InGaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells.
