Abstract

The modal structure of the optical field in fibers permits several phasematching mechanisms of four-photon scattering processes.1. We consider here the relevant case of mixing between the two orthogonally polarized linear modes of a birefringent fiber. Early and more recent experiments2-6 have demonstrated that the frequency conversion of picosecond pulses in biréfringent fibers is governed by the competition between parametric and Raman scattering.
