Abstract
Waveguide frequency conversion based on quasi-phasematched (QPM) nonlinear optical interactions has been actively studied over the past several years as a means for efficiently generating radiation at wavelengths where no convenient source exists. Quasiphasematching requires modulation of the nonlinear susceptibility every coherence length (typically several microns), so these devices require media with nonlinear susceptibilities that can be spatially patterned. All efficient QPM waveguide devices fabricated to date have used ferroelectrics with periodically reversed domains to accomplish the necessary modulation of the effective nonlinear coefficient.
