Abstract
Recently, there has been increasing interest in glass waveguide wavelength multi/ demultiplexer in the infrared region for applications in fiber communication and sensor systems. The new demultiplexer to be presented here is shown in Fig.1. Its waveguides are made by ion-exchange with its arm 2 cladded by an AI2O3 layer. The demultiplexing is based on mode transformation from the fundamental mode in the input waveguide to the local fundamental mode of the 5-layer branch structure in the branch area near the apex [1 and 2] and the difference in the dispersion characteristics of the two dissimilar branches.
