Abstract

Recently Erbium-doped waveguide amplifiers (EDWAs) have received considerable attention, because of their potential applications in optical communication systems as components that can be integrated on the same substrate as filters, couplers, tapers and multiplexers. Gain of more than 10 dB has been obtained for EDWAs for a modest pump power of 145 mW [1]. Erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) are already well established as components in optical communication systems and gains of more than 50 dB have been achieved [2].
