Abstract
The beam propagation method (BPM) has been the workhorse technique for modeling most passive optical waveguiding structures used in integrated and fiber-optics due to its flexibility and efficiency. However, many modern devices stretch or exceed the limits of BPM, and alternate techniques, such as the completely general finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, must be employed.
