Abstract

Integration of limited photonic crystal (PhC) regions with conventional waveguides (CWGs) having low refractive index contrast preserves the advantages of CWGs while incorporating PhCs to overcome CWG limitations [Optics Express 10, 1334 (2002)]. We present simulation results that demonstrate the promise of this approach to realize very compact planar lightwave circuit elements in low refractive index contrast CWGs.
